As Race Director of our OTHTC Ultra 50K and 30K, Julie is adding a 10K distance this year. Here's our chance to preview the course. Our Summer Challenge version starts from the College Trailhead parking lot. The course is approximately 6.1 miles and has about 900 feet of gain.
This is a loop course beginning and ending on College Heights Blvd at the dirt parking lot behind the Cerro Coso child development center. Start by heading south on College Heights Blvd. Turn left on the dirt road (RC96) along the fence line. At the end of the fence line, turn right on RC27. BLM signs say GLDBUG and SNLND.
After the hill at about 1.08 miles, continue to the left on RC27/SNLND. At the fork around mile 1.41, follow the trail to the right at GLDBUG sign/RC14. At the fork around mile 1.57, stay left and follow GLDBUG sign/RC14 sign. Continue through the mining area.
At mile 1.85 at the top of the hill, turn left and continue up the hill. You'll reach a high point at around mile 1.9, in an open area. This may be a trickier area to follow so we'll heavily mark it. Continue through the open area. Do NOT turn on any trails heading towards College Heights Blvd. Continue heading towards the house.
At around mile 2.2, turn right (south). You'll pass by Rocky Top Ranch and join RC15. Continue south on RC15, as it curves to the southeast. At mile 2.8, turn right at the fenced off mine. At mile 2.86, turn right again and head towards Boundary Road.
At mile 3.06, turn right onto Boundary Road/RC21. Continue west on Boundary Road for about 1 mile, passing the location of the Ultra's "Gracie's Mansion" aid station, now signed "Prospectors" camp.(From here you will be following the Ultra 30k route.)
At mile 4.03, turn right onto RC15. At mile 4.45, turn left onto RC10 (College Heights Blvd). Follow RC10 all the way back down to where you started.
